Not only women can have breasts. Breast formation is also common in men, especially during puberty or adolescence. This is often a huge source of shame that can cause all kinds of obstacles in daily life. However, breast formation and swollen nipples can also cause nasty pain complaints. Many men hardly dare to talk about the problem, which of course does not improve the situation. Fortunately, there is always something you can do about it! Today we discuss where the problem actually resides, and how it can be solved again. What is Gynecomastia? Gynecomastia is the scientific term for breast growth in men. This comes in all shapes and sizes, from small lumps of tissue to full-grown breasts. It mainly happens in young people up to the age of 25, and in men over 50. Fortunately, it is usually not dangerous - but that does not mean that it cannot be very annoying! Breast formation is related to fluctuations in hormone levels. These can be caused by external factors such as medication, supplements or steroids. However, men can also suffer from gynecomastia for no apparent reason. The reason for this is that the hormone balance can also change significantly during different life stages. Testosterone and Estrogen Breast formation takes place under the influence of the 'female' hormone estrogen . Normally men don't make that much of it, so they don't get breasts. This can change (temporarily), especially during puberty. Some of the testosterone in your body is then converted into estrogen. This happens even more in overweight boys , because fat also produces estrogen. Older men can also suffer from estrogen dominance. After all, they produce less testosterone , so that estrogen quickly gets the upper hand. Extreme stress has a similar effect in men of all ages. Finally, medications and supplements can sometimes have an effect on estrogen production. So you need to boost your testosterone level if you want to prevent gynecomastia. What to do about gynecomastia? Gynecomastia can have many causes, in other words. In order to find the solution to the problem, you will usually first have to determine where it comes from. For boys who experience breast growth in puberty, there is good news: it usually disappears on its own. After a period of time, the breast tissue disappears. If you are older, it is unfortunately less simple. When using medicines or other hormone-controlling agents, it may be wise to see if there are alternatives. In addition, increasing testosterone sometimes has an effect, just like losing weight in the case of obesity . If all of this does not help, the excess breast tissue can be surgically removed.
